Together Flagship Policies

Previously, Mid Semester breaks in Semester 2 tend to be the week following Grand Final weekend, with this typically being between weeks 9 and 10. In comparison, Semester 1 mid semester break tends to be close to the middle of semester (Between weeks 5 and 6 this year), generally aligned with Easter.

Consistent Semester 2 Mid-Semester Break

Many students, especially international and exchange students, find themselves being taken advantage of by landlords, it is their Union’s responsibility to step in and help them. We plan to centralise and aggregate opinions and experiences of different landlords and accommodation of Unimelb students. Similar to the Purple Pingers ShitRentals website people could report their issues.

Across all faculties, every assessment outcome and feedback must be shared with students in a predictable, timely way. Currently, assessments must be returned in time for final assessment - but the final assessment is not necessarily worth the most.

Across faculties, all assessment results and actionable feedback should be visible to students in a timely manner.

The university has concerns about making Libraries 24/7 all the time due to additional security costs mainly - and yet there is a clear claim from students that they want this. So far, the union has been successful in getting extended library hours during examination periods. Making this official and pushing for it would be ideal.

Keep libraries open longer during exam periods.

We know how often students staying short-term leave behind usable furniture and small appliances; we want to reduce waste through a circular furniture scheme, facilitating swaps between students moving out and moving in.

Reducing waste and costs for students, this service will enable students staying short-term to exchange furniture and home goods.

$50 Cost of Living Voucher

As an emergency cost-of-living measure, we will ensure that every student gets a $50 food voucher to help them get through the semester.

If racism or discrimination happens in class, it shouldn’t end with “that’s bad”. There should be somewhere to take it further, something that happens next, and someone responsible for it.
This reporting also gives students meaningful choices about what happens after they report. A student could choose whether they want information only, welfare/support, incident documented, etc. This makes the system much more student-centered.
