Academic Adjustment Plan Equity
Academic Adjustment Plans are not enforceable across faculties.
Academic Adjustment Plans outline a set of minimum adjustments deemed reasonable under the Disability Discrimination Act and by the university alongside a student’s health professionals. Since the Adjustment plans are not enforceable, these adjustments are only deemed necessary to implement when they are convenient.
Why this matters
In order to meet its obligations to ensure Disabled students are not discriminated against by the structure of a course, the university agrees to provide students with disabilities with ongoing support to perform to the best of their ability. But since these adjustments don’t hold weight against the course structure, faculties have little incentive to steer course structures from a convenient, ableist norm.
How we implement it
Emphasize the importance of a systematic re-evaluation of the approach to student equity - fighting to ensure that student equity is prioritised above minimising changes to course structure.
