Greater funding for our clubs

Greater Funding for the Clubs and Societies Department

Over the course of 5 years, the Clubs and Societies Department’s budget has reduced from ~$325,000 to around ~$270,000 this year in student council. This means the initial allocated grant budget for each club has been reduced from around ~$3500 of UMSU’s yearly expenditure, to roughly $2000 in 2026. This can be explained by University’s increasing deficit and the need for UMSU to return a proportion of SSAF funding back to the University to mitigate the spending shortfall.

Why this matters

Increasing Clubs & Societies’ budget would ensure all clubs, regardless of tiered status or size, are able to run various events catering to student cohort without fears of financial constraints.

How we implement it

UMSU has done this previously, so we can do it again! Together will: Approve a budget allocation size in the first C&S Committee Meeting (1). Discuss what the budget would be allocated to (e.g. Exec Mixer Sem 1 & 2, Awards Night, Clubs Expo, UMSU Website, etc) Advocate for budget allocation of ~$270,000 or higher in the first Student Council Meeting (1) (Note: this depends on ticket majority in Student Council to vote in support of the budget) Determine the distribution formula for the increased budget Annual Grant Cap Increase: Raise $2000 or more by 2027 (Ambitious Target: ~$2500-$3000 or more). Events, Operational and Staff/Administrative Costs: Allocate remainder of total budget to cover these aforementioned expenses.
